Who is Officer Gomez?

And how does he know what he knows?

This question comes up often, and I’m always happy to share my background:
I hold a bachelor’s degree in electronics engineering technology but have no formal training in psychology. My real education began when I started working as a School Resource Officer (SRO) at a middle school.
In this role, I’ve had the privilege of listening to thousands of stories from both students and parents—stories of joy, struggle, and growth. From those interactions, I started noticing patterns in behaviors, actions, and outcomes. I’ve kept extensive notes over the years and used this raw, real-world data to form insights that I share with parents. My goal is to provide practical, non-political advice for raising kids.
I’ve been an SRO for 14 years now, and my views on parenting and children have evolved as I’ve seen what works and what doesn’t. I’m not afraid to adjust my approach based on real-life outcomes, because this work is always about learning and improving.
Beyond my professional role, my wife and I have opened our home to at-risk teens over the years. Each of them has taught us valuable lessons about resilience, relationships, and how to navigate life’s challenges. These experiences have deeply shaped my understanding of what kids need to thrive.
One thing I realized early in my career is that the kids who come from difficult home situations often need someone like a school resource officer and their school community—to be part of their support system. That knowledge motivates everything I do.
I don’t claim to have all the answers, but I do share my observations and lessons learned in the hope that they’ll help other parents and families.
Happy Parenting,
Officer Gomez
